Launching a Music Album Without Music Videos

When Punjabi superstar Ammy Virk released his album Layers, it marked his return to the album format after a nine-year gap. The release strategy for this 10-track project was unique: the artist's team decided not to shoot official music videos initially. Instead, they wanted to launch the music first, track stream performance across platforms, and later invest in music videos for whichever tracks emerged as natural breakout hits.

Saregama's video team was initially brought in to create a single, long-form full album "Jukebox" video to serve as the main visual hub on YouTube. Because the album jumped between entirely different musical genres ranging from high-energy Punjabi pop to deep, emotional ballads, the visuals needed to give each track its own distinct identity while relying entirely on still photography and graphic design assets.

Launching a Music Album Without Music Videos

Building for Modular Scale

Since I didn’t have any music video footage to work with, I used high-resolution promotional artist photos to build custom motion graphics layouts inside After Effects. To ensure the long-form Jukebox video didn't feel repetitive over its runtime, I designed a completely unique color scheme, visual theme, and smooth transition sequence for each of the 10 tracks. When the artist's team reviewed the final Jukebox edit, they liked the individual song treatments so much that they decided to expand the launch strategy. They requested separate standalone videos for every single track (internally referred to as "Audio Songs") alongside animated social media posters for Instagram Reels and Shorts. Because I had already built the 10 distinct visual styles as separate, modular compositions within my master After Effects project, expanding the deliverables required almost no extra design time. I easily exported the 10 individual track videos and quickly resized the existing assets into vertical social media dimensions.

The Last-Minute Pivot & Post-Launch Lyricals

  • The Technical Bottleneck: Right before the scheduled global launch, an external branding conflict forced an immediate, last-minute change to the release channel names. This meant every single creative asset including the full-length Jukebox, the 10 separate audio tracks, and the social media motion posters had to be opened, updated with the new channel graphics, re-rendered, and re-exported under incredibly tight timelines.

  • Post-Launch Strategy: Once the album officially dropped, the track Solid was chosen for a secondary promotional push. I was tasked with creating a dedicated lyric video for it. To match the track's heavy energy, I stepped away from the clean layouts used in the main album and designed a gritty, fast-paced, and glitchy visual style using stylized freeze-frame character animations and aggressive text treatments.

The modular motion graphics pipeline effectively filled the visual void of a major album launch, providing clean, engaging assets across YouTube and social platforms while keeping production overhead incredibly low.
