Understanding the Brand
In a market dominated by audio giants like Sample Sound, Big Fish Audio, Dabro Music, Image Sounds and Cymatics, Phonogram didn't just need a logo - It needed to cut through the noise. The brand is dedicated to crafting premium, organic, and inspiring sound libraries. They focus on sonic purity and DIY independence, delivering carefully recorded and curated sample packs that empower producers to create with authenticity.
The Challenge: Creating a cohesive visual language that balanced the "DIY" spirit of independent creators and the "Premium" feel of high-end audio engineering. The identity had to be bold enough to stand out on crowded marketplaces like LANDR and ADSR, yet refined enough to power its own independent storefront.
The Four Pillars
Before a single pixel was moved, I collaborated with the brand to distill their mission and vision into four core pillars. These keywords acted as the Brand’s DNA ensuring that every asset, from a favicon to a full billboard remained on-brand.
Sonic Purity
Clean, organic, and natural textures in sound design.
DIY Independence
Empowering the individual creator by being approachable.
Minimalist Excellence
A "function-first" philosophy with zero clutter.
Creator-Centric
Built for producers, by producers.
From Sketch to System
The identity began with competition analysis and market research. The client’s vision for the aesthetic was clear. They aimed for a clean, premium presence akin to industry brands like Native Instruments and iZotope. My role was to translate the four core strategic keywords into a cohesive visual system that felt both balanced and timeless.
Drawn on paper first, I made the logo symbol by combining a musical note and the letter ‘P’. The wordmark uses a custom font to give it that distinct look. The final logo was then crafted using Affinity.
To make the brand truly stand out, I curated a high-contrast color system heavily inspired by modern Pop Art. By pairing these vibrant, hyper-saturated tones with a clean, technical layout, I created a unique visual system. It allows Phonogram to retain a premium, serious feel while injecting a burst of raw, artistic energy that commands attention on digital storefronts.
The typography was carefully chosen to look similar to what Native Instruments and Izotope have without being a copy. Initially, two fonts were selected, but I quickly narrowed the choice down to Outfit maintaining a minimalist and premium aesthetic.
Creating and Capturing the Art
To ensure Phonogram stood out on third-party stores, I moved away from traditional "album art" and into the third dimension. The artwork needed to communicate exactly what kind of instruments were inside the pack, while also coming across as a premium product.
The client provided a set of 3D assets for their flagship sample pack series, Session Pop. I brought these into Unreal Engine to build custom studio environments and lighting setups from scratch. Choosing Unreal Engine was a deliberate workflow decision; its real-time viewport allowed me to tweak scenes instantly without waiting for hours of rendering time.
This workflow unlocked two major advantages:
Cinematic Lighting: I built a classic three-point studio lighting system to wrap the assets in a moody, boutique atmosphere that flat 2D graphics simply couldn't replicate.
Asset Versatility: Because these assets were built in a live 3D environment, the exact same scenes could be seamlessly repurposed later for motion graphics and promotional videos.
The final covers were composited and polished in Photoshop, combining the high-end 3D renders with clean, bold typography. The result is a striking, minimalist look that catches the eye on crowded marketplaces. To finish the presentation, I also created realistic 3D box art mockups to give the digital products a tangible, premium feel.
The Independent Storefront
I designed and deployed the Phonogram website using Wix Studio. Wix allowed me to create the store with the infrastructure already in place. I just had to manage the design and the layouts to make the site in accordance with the brand’s identity. The goal was to make it easy for the user and reduce the distance between a user discovering a sound and hitting the "Buy" button.
UX Design:A light-mode interface that matches the premium look and feel of Brands like Native Instruments and Izotope.
Strategic Growth: Beyond the UI, I integrated an affiliate program to encourage backlinks from audio bloggers and influencers, while optimizing all metadata to ensure the brand ranked for high-intent search terms.
The Market Launch
A brand in the audio space needs to move. To generate buzz for the flagship "Session Pop" series, I executed a multi-platform marketing strategy:
Pre-Launch Awareness: Before the products dropped, I designed a series of educational "mini-tutorial" carousels for Instagram and Facebook. This provided immediate value to producers while subtly introducing them to the upcoming brand.
Promotional Trailers: Created high-energy trailers that showcased the "Sonic Purity" and ease of use for the sample packs.I also used our 3D assets to create hyper-realistic digital billboard mockup videos, giving the launch a massive, cinematic feel.
Influencer Collaborations: Partnered with key YouTubers and bloggers in the music field to showcase the products and build organic credibility.
Affiliate Ecosystem: To sustain momentum and boost SEO, I initiated a performance-based affiliate program. This incentivized creators and audio bloggers to link back to the store, steadily building high-quality backlinks and search visibility.
Phonogram successfully launched on LANDR, ADSR, Loopcloud, and Producer Loops, in addition to their own storefront.
Market Impact: The brand established a distinct visual signature that is now recognizable across the world's largest sample distributors.
Proven Revenue: The packs are actively generating sales across all storefronts, proving the effectiveness of the "Boutique" positioning.
The Future: With a robust brand architecture now in place, Phonogram is perfectly positioned for its next evolution: the development of its own audio plugins.
