Setting the Tone for a Flagship Series
While working with Prime Focus, I served as the dedicated 2D character animator for a high-stakes pilot project commissioned by Tata Motors. The goal of the video was to create a highly stylized, animated promotional piece showcasing new vehicles and their internal tech features to the public.
To break away from standard, dry corporate car promos, the project was framed around a high-octane 007-style spy thriller narrative. The video required three central characters: a hero, a villain, and a tech call operator.
Because this video was a pitch pilot, its visual success would determine whether Tata Motors greenlit a massive, multi-part animated promotional series. Operating within a cross-functional production pipeline, my specific role was to take the character concepts, build their underlying technical mechanics from scratch, and execute all character motion throughout the entire storyboard.
Style Alignment & Custom Rigging
- The Creative Director's Pivot: Early in production, multiple team members were creating vector assets simultaneously, which caused the art styles to clash. To solve this, our Creative Director stepped in to unify the visual direction, providing clean character assets built primarily out of minimalist, capsule-like shapes.
- The Technical Build: Since these raw assets were handed over to me unrigged, I imported them directly into Adobe Animate. Being the sole character animator on the project, I was given full ownership of the backend organization. I carefully broke down the capsule shapes, mapped out the pivot points, and rigged the character structures using nested Graphic Objects and Movie Clips to maintain complete creative flexibility over the complex motion requirements.
Animating a Spy Thriller
The storyboard demanded a diverse range of character behaviors that went far beyond basic corporate gestures. Using the native toolsets of Adobe Animate, I executed a wide spectrum of stylized keyframe movements:
Built fluid, natural walk cycle for the hero, ensuring his weight and speed matched the fast pacing of a spy film.
Animated complex multi-axis shots of characters interacting with the car interiors, including steering movements, shifting gears, and sudden reactions during high-speed driving shots.
Developed distinct personality traits through performance animation, giving the villain sharp, expressive smirks, the hero a calm demeanor, and the operator fast-paced, focused facial ticks during close-up camera cuts.
A look at the raw character animation. Due to tight video length constraints, many of these scenes didn't make the final cut. This compilation brings together all of the custom character movement and rigging I designed for the project.
Overcoming Challenges
- Stepping Up in Stalled Scenes: The main pressure was internal, the video had to look polished enough to sell a long-term campaign to Tata Motors. During several technically demanding scenes where the layout and animation pipeline stalled due to staging concerns, I took the initiative to map out alternative choreography choices. These adjustments were praised by the Creative Director and unblocked the rest of the team.
- A Foundation in Launch Dynamics: While internal studio restructuring down the line ultimately prevented the pilot from scaling into a full series, the project served as a foundational milestone in my career. It gave me deep, hands-on insight into how large-scale client pitches are initiated from the ground up, how to maintain stylistic discipline within an agency team, and how to own a technical rigging pipeline from scratch.
